Elastics (Rubber Bands)
Elastics, or rubber bands, help to improve the fit of your upper and lower teeth. They are commonly used to correct bad bites. If our orthodontist prescribes rubber bands, please wear them as directed.

Herbst® Appliance
The Herbst® appliance helps to reduce overbites by encouraging the lower jaw forward, and the upper molars backward. This appliance is generally used for younger children.

Palatal Expander
Palatal expanders widen your upper jaw by putting gentle pressure on your upper teeth. Our orthodontist will provide instructions about how and when you should adjust your expander. After your jaw has been expanded to the desired width, you will wear the expander for a few more months to prevent any regression.

Positioners
Positioners are used to complete the final tooth movements in your orthodontic treatment.

Retainers
Retainers are used following straightening treatments to maintain the position of your teeth. They may be either fixed or removable. Our orthodontist will provide instruction on how to wear and care for your retainer. Please wear it as directed to make sure that your smile stays beautiful.

Separators (Spacers)
Separators, or spacers, are small rubber circles that may be placed between your teeth to push them apart, often in preparation for rubber bands. While wearing separators, you should avoid sticky foods, toothpicks, or floss.
